- Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you must shop at night, go with a friend or family member. Criminals are opportunists. They look for people who appear to be "easy" targets and generally search for people who are unaware of their surroundings.
- Avoid wearing expensive jewelry.
- Do not carry a purse or wallet, if possible. Again, criminals are always looking for an opportunity. A woman carrying a purse while shopping may find it necessary to set her purse down for a moment, giving the criminal ample time to steal it. Instead, keep in your front pocket only the necessities: cash, checkbook, credit/debit cards, and your driver's license.
- Even though you are rushed and thinking about many things, stay alert to your surroundings.
- Avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
- Pay for purchases with a check or credit card when possible.
- Notify the credit card issue immediately if your credit card is lost, stolen or misused. Criminals will immediately start using your credit cards after stealing them.
- Keep a record of all your credit card numbers in a safe place at home. You can also store this important information on some smart phones that have programs designed to keep this information safe and secure.
- Be extra careful if you do carry a wallet or purse. They are the prime targets of criminals in crowded shopping areas, transportation terminals, bus stops, on buses and other rapid transit systems.
- Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion to avoid mishaps.
- Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. At this time of year, "con-artists" my try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking your money and/or belongings.
On behalf of the men and women at Manvel Police Department, may you and your family have a happy Thanksgiving and a very merry Christmas.
